Solar Panel Grants and Incentives 2026

There is no single upfront grant for solar in 2026. But there are several ways to reduce the cost and improve your return. Here is what is actually available.

Which solar incentives are available in 2026?

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Available to all

The SEG pays you for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Rates vary by supplier, typically 4-15p per unit. You need an MCS certificate to register, which we provide on completion. A well-placed 4kWp system typically exports 400–800 units per year.

0% VAT on solar installations

Available to all

All domestic solar panel installations are exempt from VAT. This means no VAT on panels, inverter, mounting, or installation costs, a saving of around 20% versus the pre-2022 rate.

ECO4 scheme (low-income households)

Means-tested

ECO4 funds energy efficiency improvements including solar for qualifying low-income households with a D-rated or below EPC. Eligibility depends on benefits received. Contact your local council to check.

Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2)

Means-tested / area-dependent

HUG2 provides funding for off-gas-grid properties in lower income bands. Includes solar PV in some schemes. Availability varies by local authority. Contact your council to check.

What most Chilterns homeowners actually get

0% VAT on the full installation cost (saving ~20% versus standard rate)
Smart Export Guarantee: typically £40-120 per year for a 4kWp system
40–60% reduction in electricity bills by self-consuming generated power
Typical payback period: 7–10 years, then 15+ years of near-free electricity

No upfront grant for most homeowners

Unlike the EV OZEV grant or the heat pump BUS grant, there is no universal upfront payment towards solar panels in 2026 for standard homeowners. The benefits are real but come through bill savings, export income, and VAT exemption rather than a direct payment. Be cautious of any company claiming otherwise.

What do homeowners ask about solar incentives?

There is no direct upfront government grant for solar panels in 2026 for most homeowners. The main financial incentive is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for surplus electricity you export to the grid. Low-income households may qualify for ECO4 funding. All solar installations are exempt from VAT.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers to offer tariffs that pay you for each unit of electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier, typically 4–15p per unit. You need an MCS certificate to register, which we provide on installation day.
No. Solar panel installations on domestic properties are exempt from VAT. You pay 0% VAT on the supply and installation of solar panels, inverters, and batteries in the same installation.
ECO4 is a government scheme that funds energy efficiency improvements (including solar panels) for low-income households in properties with an EPC rating of D or below. Eligibility is means-tested and depends on benefits received. Contact your local council or an ECO4 registered installer to check.
Yes. Adding battery storage does not affect your SEG eligibility, provided your system remains MCS-certified. We ensure your installation maintains certification when adding storage.
