Heat Pump Installation in the Chilterns

An air source heat pump extracts warmth from outside air to heat your home, running on electricity rather than gas. Chiltern Energy Group installs MCS-certified heat pumps across the Chilterns from £10,495. Eligible properties pay from £2,995 after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. We check suitability at a real site survey and tell you upfront if it is not right for your property.

Why switch to a heat pump?

Heat pumps are not right for every property. When they are, the numbers are compelling.

Lower running costs than gas boilers

A modern air source heat pump delivers 3–4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. Even at current electricity prices, running costs compare favourably with gas for most properties.

Up to £7,500 off with the BUS grant

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 grant towards a qualifying heat pump installation. We apply on your behalf and deduct it from your invoice.

Reduced carbon footprint

Heat pumps run on electricity, which is getting cleaner every year as the UK grid decarbonises. Combined with solar panels, a heat pump can approach zero-carbon heating.

Consistent warmth, not boiler peaks

Heat pumps heat your home gently and consistently rather than blasting and cutting out. Most people find the comfort level noticeably better, particularly in well-insulated rooms.

How does heat pump installation work?

Heat pump installations take longer than a boiler swap. Here is what to expect.

1

Site survey and heat loss assessment

We assess your home's insulation, existing radiators, and heat demand. This determines whether a heat pump will work effectively and what size you need.

2

BUS grant check

We confirm BUS grant eligibility and handle the application. The £7,500 grant is deducted from your invoice: you never pay it and claim it back.

3

Installation

Installation typically takes 2 to 3 days. We position the outdoor unit, connect to your heating system, and commission the controls.

4

Handover

We walk you through the controls and explain how to get the most from your heat pump. Heat pumps work differently from boilers: we make sure you understand how to run it efficiently.

How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work?

The BUS grant provides £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump installation for eligible properties. You do not apply yourself. We apply on your behalf as a registered MCS installer, and the grant is deducted directly from your invoice.

Property must have a valid EPC within the last 10 years
Property must not have a recommendation to insulate cavity or loft
Grant applies to air source heat pumps only (different amount for ground source)
Available for occupied homes, not rental or new build

Is a heat pump right for your property?

Heat pumps perform best in well-insulated properties with radiators sized for lower flow temperatures, or with underfloor heating. We check all of this at the site survey. If a heat pump is not right for your property, we tell you upfront. We would rather lose a sale than install a system that underperforms.

  • Detached and semi-detached properties with good insulation
  • Properties with loft insulation and cavity or solid wall insulation
  • Homes with modern double or triple glazing
  • Properties where gas supply is unreliable or expensive

What do homeowners ask about heat pump installation?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 government grant towards an air source heat pump installation. You do not need to apply yourself: we apply on your behalf as an MCS-certified installer. The grant is deducted from your installation cost. To qualify, your property must have a valid EPC with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations.
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes with larger radiators or underfloor heating. They run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers, so if your home loses heat quickly, it may need insulation improvements first. Our site survey assesses this honestly: we will tell you if it is not the right time for a heat pump.
After the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, a typical air source heat pump installation costs from around £2,995 depending on the property and system size. Without the grant, costs typically range from £10,495 to £15,000. We give you a fixed all-in price at the site survey.
In a well-insulated home, an air source heat pump can be cheaper to run than a gas boiler, especially as gas prices have risen. Heat pumps have a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 2.5 to 4: meaning for every 1 unit of electricity they use, they produce 2.5 to 4 units of heat. However, electricity is still more expensive per kWh than gas, so insulation quality matters.
Most air source heat pump installations fall under permitted development rights in England and do not need planning permission, provided the unit is not visible from a highway and meets size and noise restrictions. We confirm at the survey whether your installation qualifies.
