A Simpson & Partners tethered EV charger has been installed at a Beaconsfield, HP9 2TU property, replacing a five-year-old unit that had failed. One of our NAPIT-certified electricians attended the site to diagnose the fault and found a failed motherboard. Rather than repair the old charger, the homeowner chose to upgrade to a modern Simpson & Partners model, customised to match the property's aesthetic. The new installation included a dedicated consumer unit, fresh cabling, and careful repositioning to meet current safety standards. The customer was charging their car within five minutes of commissioning.

Why did this Beaconsfield homeowner replace their five-year-old EV charger?

The original charger had developed a failed motherboard after five years of use. Rather than attempt a repair, the homeowner decided to invest in a newer model that would blend better with the property's appearance. The Simpson & Partners tethered charger offered exactly what they wanted: modern styling with the option to customise the lid and body colour to match the house. Because they had been happy with a tethered charger previously, they chose the tethered version again. This decision meant we could plan the installation to take advantage of the existing cable route while upgrading the electrical infrastructure behind it.

What electrical work was needed during this installation?

This was far more than a simple charger swap. When we arrived, we discovered that the old consumer unit was also faulty, so we removed it entirely and installed a brand-new dedicated EV consumer unit in its place. We then removed all the old cabling and installed fresh EV ultra cable from Doncaster Cable, which is engineered specifically for EV charging applications. The new Simpson & Partners charger was then connected to this upgraded infrastructure. This approach meant the customer had a completely modern electrical setup supporting their charger, not just a replacement unit bolted onto ageing wiring and fuseboard equipment.

How was the charger positioned on the wall?

One critical issue we identified was that whoever installed the original charger had positioned it too low on the wall. This meant the customer had to bend down awkwardly to access the charging socket and connector. To bring the installation into compliance with current standards and improve usability, we installed the new charger at a higher position on the wall. This required drilling a new hole for the rear entry into the charger itself. We then made good the existing hole that was left behind. The result is a charger at the correct height, making it comfortable and safe to use without strain.

What makes a tethered charger the right choice for this Beaconsfield property?

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached to the unit, which means there is no separate connector to store or lose. For homeowners who want simplicity and reliability, this is often the preferred option. The Simpson & Partners tethered model combines this practical design with the ability to customise its appearance to suit the property. In Beaconsfield, where many homes are Victorian and Edwardian properties with distinctive character, the ability to match the charger to the building's style is a genuine advantage. The homeowner in this case appreciated that they could choose colours that complemented their home rather than installing a standard black or white box that stood out.

How does cable routing work in a Beaconsfield installation?

Many Chilterns properties require careful planning when running EV charger cables from the consumer unit to the driveway or garage. Victorian and Edwardian homes in particular present challenges because the electrical infrastructure was never designed for high-power EV charging. At the free in-person site survey, one of our NAPIT-certified electricians assesses the route from your fuse board to where the charger will sit, checking for obstacles, existing trunking, and the most practical path for new cabling. In this Beaconsfield installation, we were able to use the existing cable route established by the previous charger, but we upgraded the cabling itself to modern EV ultra cable and ensured the consumer unit could handle the demand safely. This is why the survey is so important: it means we can plan the work properly before we start, and you know exactly what will happen.

What happens after the charger is installed?

Once the Simpson & Partners charger was connected and the new consumer unit was live, we commissioned the unit to ensure everything was working correctly. The customer was able to start charging their car within five minutes. There were no delays, no follow-up visits, and no complications. The charger was ready to use immediately. This speed is possible because we had done the groundwork properly: the survey identified what needed replacing, we sourced the right components, and the installation followed a clear plan.

Common questions

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached to the unit. An untethered charger requires you to connect a separate cable each time you charge. Tethered chargers are simpler to use and there is nothing to store or lose. Untethered chargers offer more flexibility if you need different cable lengths.
An EV charger draws significant power, typically 7kW or more. An old or faulty consumer unit may not have the capacity or safety features to handle this demand. A dedicated EV consumer unit ensures safe, reliable charging and protects your home's electrical system.
Not all electricians are qualified to install EV chargers. You need a NAPIT-certified electrician who understands EV-specific wiring, consumer unit work, and safety standards. Chiltern Energy Group's installers are NAPIT-certified and trained specifically for EV charger installations.
A standard domestic EV charger installation takes 2-4 hours. If the job involves consumer unit work, new cabling, or other electrical upgrades, it may take longer. Our site survey identifies what is needed so you know the timescale before we start.
Most domestic EV chargers are permitted development and do not need planning permission. However, if your property is in a conservation area or the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there may be restrictions. We advise on this during your free site survey.
