We installed a MyEnergi Zappi GLO EV charger at an Amersham, HP6 5EG property recently. The homeowner now charges their electric car for free using excess solar energy generated during the day. One of our NAPIT-certified electricians worked through a complex installation involving careful cable routing, DNO liaison, and smart solar integration to make this happen. What challenges did the installation face?

This wasn't a straightforward installation. The first challenge was space. There wasn't enough room in and around where the incoming electricity supply arrived at the property. The homeowner also didn't have a double pole isolator fitted, which is essential for safe EV charger installation.

We contacted UK Power Networks, the Distribution Network Operator for the Chilterns area. They arranged for a double pole isolator to be fitted. Once that was done, we worked with the existing space in the cupboard, moving a few things around to fit our dedicated EV consumer unit.

The second challenge was the cable route. The property already had solar panel cables running in trunking around the room and through the wall. We had to route our EV charger cable without disturbing any of the existing solar cables. The cable then had to run down the white rendered external wall, and we didn't want large, intrusive cabling visible on the outside of the property.

We chose 6mm EV Ultra cable to keep the installation as neat and unobtrusive as possible. For the current transformer clamp (CT clamp) that monitors solar generation, we used a wireless Harvey CT clamp instead of a wired connection. Since the MyEnergi charger was only 10 metres away, the wireless option worked perfectly and meant we could use slightly thinner cable that was far less visually intrusive on the rendered wall.

How does the solar integration actually work?

Once we'd installed the charger and commissioned it, we showed the homeowner how the system integrates with their solar panels and battery storage. The Zappi GLO monitors the excess solar energy being generated in real time. When there's surplus power available, the charger automatically starts charging the car at no cost.

We contacted the customer a day or two after installation to check everything was working. They told us they'd already received their very first free charge from excess solar generation the day after we installed it. The system was working exactly as designed.

What does the installation process involve?

  3. Carefully routed the 6mm EV Ultra cable along the existing solar trunking without disturbing it
  4. Installed the wireless Harvey CT clamp to monitor solar generation
  5. Ran the cable down the external rendered wall using discreet conduit
  6. Commissioned the system and tested the solar integration
  7. Showed the homeowner how to monitor and control charging via the Zappi app
