We recently installed a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro EV charger at a property in Chalfont St Giles, SL9 9PD. This was a complex installation that required careful planning from the outset. One of our NAPIT-certified electricians carried out a free site survey and quickly identified the main challenge: the charger needed to go on a wooden outbuilding where the car parks, but the incoming electrical supply was at the front of the house by the front door. The distance between them meant we had to design a route that would be both safe and neat. Our installation process started with that free in-person site survey. We assessed the entire route from the incoming supply to the outbuilding and identified what needed to happen:

First, we installed a new dedicated EV consumer unit next to the live incoming meter cupboard at the front of the house. This is essential when you're running a high-power charger — it gives the installation its own circuit protection and means the charger doesn't compete with other household circuits.

Next came the cable run itself. We used EV Ultra 12mm cable to carry power through the house. The route was not straightforward: the cable ran under the floorboards in the living room, then around underneath the kitchen worktops, and out through the conservatory. At that point, we connected the cable into a whisker box — a transition point that allows us to switch from one cable type to another.

From the whisker box, we ran 25 metres of SWA armoured cable around the perimeter of the garden. We cleated this cable alongside the wooden outbuilding to keep it secure and tidy. The cable then entered the outbuilding from the rear, which kept the installation looking neat and professional.

Once inside, we mounted the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro on the wooden building. However, the weight of the charger and the cables meant the back of the wooden structure needed reinforcement. We strengthened it so that once everything was installed, we had a solid, safe connection that would last.

We also installed the Type Two cable holder — the connector that lets the homeowner plug in their vehicle — and ran an additional ethernet cable into the outbuilding. The homeowner was planning to upgrade the outbuilding with a router eventually, and wanted a hardwired connection for commissioning purposes. This flexibility is one of the strengths of the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro: you can use Wi-Fi for everyday operation, or hardwire it with a Cat6 ethernet cable for a rock-solid connection.

How did we ensure the charger would work reliably in the outbuilding?

Once the physical installation was complete, we commissioned the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and tested the connection. The homeowner had Wi-Fi available at the time, so we connected the charger wirelessly.
