Tethered EV Charger Installation in the Chilterns

A tethered EV charger has the cable permanently attached to the unit. You never need to carry a charging lead or fetch it from the boot. It is the most popular choice for homeowners because it is simple: pull up, plug in, done. We install tethered home charging points across the Chilterns. Every job starts with a free in-person site survey. NAPIT-certified installation. Call 01494 977298 to book yours.

What is a tethered EV charger?

A tethered charger is a home charging point with the cable built into the unit. The cable hangs from the charger and plugs directly into your car. There is nothing to store, carry or retrieve. An untethered charger, sometimes called a socketed charger, has a socket instead of a built-in cable, so you need to bring your own lead each time. Most homeowners choose tethered for convenience. The built-in cable is available the moment you arrive home.

Is a tethered charger compatible with my electric car?

Almost all modern electric cars sold in the UK use a Type 2 connector. The vast majority of tethered home chargers use a Type 2 cable, which means they are compatible with almost every EV currently on the road. During your site survey, we confirm the right cable type and length for your specific car before any work is agreed.

What happens if I change my electric car in the future?

Because most UK electric cars use a Type 2 connector, changing your car does not usually mean changing your charger. The cable remains compatible with the new vehicle. If you ever moved to a car with a different connector standard, which is unlikely for any EV sold in the UK today, the charger unit itself can be replaced without redoing the cable route or circuit.

What does tethered EV charger installation involve?

One of our NAPIT-registered engineers visits your property first. We check your consumer unit, measure the cable route from the unit to the charger location, and confirm the right tethered charger for your setup. On installation day, we run the cable, mount the unit, connect it to the consumer unit, and commission everything. Most jobs take between three and six hours. You receive a full installation certificate before we leave. EV charger installation is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Our NAPIT-registered engineers self-certify all tethered charger installations and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. Read more about Part P electrical work.

Why choose Chiltern Energy Group for your tethered charger installation?

We visit every property in person before quoting. There are no forms to fill in and no photos to upload. If your consumer unit needs upgrading before the circuit can be added, we tell you during the survey, not on installation day. After we finish, you have six months of aftercare. If anything fails, we are local and back within days, not weeks.
