OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant: Do Chilterns Homeowners Qualify?

The OZEV EV chargepoint grant gives you up to £350 off the cost of having a home charger installed. From 1 April 2026, that rises to £500. But there is a catch most people do not expect: if you own the house you live in, you cannot apply. The grant is specifically for renters and flat owners. If you own a rental property, there is a separate landlord scheme, and that one closes on 31 March 2026. This page explains who qualifies, who does not, and what your options are either way.

What is the OZEV EV chargepoint grant?

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) runs a grant to help people install home EV chargers. It covers up to 75% of the cost of buying and installing an eligible charger, up to a maximum of £350 per socket.

The grant goes up to £500 per socket from 1 April 2026.

You do not apply for the grant yourself. Your installer applies to OZEV on your behalf. At CEG, we confirm your eligibility at the site survey, include the grant in your quote if you qualify, and apply to OZEV when we book your installation. You just pay the balance.

Who can apply for the OZEV grant?

You qualify if all of the following apply:

  • You rent your home from a private landlord, a social housing provider, or a housing association
  • OR you own a leasehold flat with a designated parking space
  • You are the registered keeper of a fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • Your property has private off-street parking (a dedicated driveway, garage, or numbered parking space)
  • You do not live in a property where the landlord also lives (lodgers in someone's home do not qualify)

If you are a tenant, you need written permission from your landlord before the installation can go ahead. CEG can advise on how to ask for it.

Who cannot apply? (This is where most people are surprised)

If you own the house you live in, you cannot apply for this grant.

This is the part the industry does not communicate clearly. The term "OZEV grant" has become shorthand for any government EV charger incentive, which leads a lot of homeowners to expect a £350 discount they are not entitled to.

To be specific, you cannot apply if:

  • You own and live in your own house (whether freehold or leasehold house)
  • You are a lodger in someone else's home
  • Your property does not have private off-street parking
  • Your vehicle is not registered in your name as an eligible EV or plug-in hybrid
  • Your home is a new build that is required by law to have a chargepoint

The majority of homeowners in the Chilterns own their properties. Most will not qualify for the household grant.

Is there a grant for landlords?

Yes. The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint and Infrastructure Grant for Landlords is a separate scheme that lets landlords install chargepoints at their rental properties.

Key details:

  • Up to £350 per socket (rising to £500 from 1 April 2026)
  • Up to 200 grants per year for residential properties
  • Up to 100 grants per year for commercial properties

IMPORTANT: The landlord scheme closes in its current form on 31 March 2026

If you own rental property in the Chilterns and want to install chargepoints for your tenants before the deadline, get in touch now. We can survey, quote, and install quickly.

What happens to the grant from April 2026?

From 1 April 2026:

  • The renter and flat owner grant increases from £350 to £500 per socket
  • The scheme is confirmed to run until 31 March 2027
  • The landlord scheme closes in its current form on 31 March 2026 (new arrangements are expected but not yet confirmed)

What if I own my home and do not qualify?

Most Chilterns homeowners will not qualify for the household grant. That does not mean you should not install a charger.

A dedicated home EV charger is still one of the best upgrades you can make when you buy an electric car. Charging on a three-pin plug is slow and, over time, harder on your vehicle. A 7kW wall charger gets most EVs to full overnight, and using an off-peak electricity tariff can cut your charging costs significantly.

CEG offers EV charger installation from £849 including installation. We come to your property, assess the cable route, advise on the right charger for your car, and give you a fixed price with no surprises. Book a free site survey to get your quote.

What do homeowners ask about the OZEV grant?

No. If you own and live in your house, you do not qualify for the household EV chargepoint grant. The scheme is for renters and flat owners only.
Yes, if you have a designated private parking space. Leasehold flat owners with their own parking can apply for the grant.
Your landlord needs to give written consent before installation goes ahead. We can help you draft a request letter that addresses the common concerns landlords raise, such as who pays for removal and what happens at the end of the tenancy.
You need to be the registered keeper of a fully electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Standard hybrids that cannot be plugged in do not qualify.
CEG applies to OZEV through the official installer portal when we confirm your booking. You do not need to register anywhere or fill in grant forms yourself.
Yes. If you are a social housing or housing association tenant, you can apply provided you have off-street parking and an eligible vehicle.
You can still qualify, but you need to show you have a legal entitlement to that parking space, for example, a lease agreement that assigns it to your property.
CEG installs home EV chargers from £849 including installation across the Chilterns. The exact cost depends on your property and cable run length. We give you a fixed price at the survey stage.
No. The grant covers 75% of the cost, up to £350 (£500 from April 2026). You pay the remainder. So if your installation costs £1,000 and you qualify, you pay £650.
No. If you previously claimed under the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme or the Domestic Recharge Scheme, you cannot claim the current grant for the same property.
The renter and flat owner grant is confirmed until 31 March 2027. The landlord scheme closes in its current form on 31 March 2026.
They are likely a renter, flat owner, or landlord. Owner-occupiers of houses are not eligible for the household grant.
